To cap off Coachella week, we here at Heard Mentality were bummed to find out that Black Sabbath were reportedly slated to headline one of the nights, but due to Tony Iommi's battle with lymphoma (get better Tony!), the band had to pull out from what would a great kickoff to the band's 2012 tour.
That being said, Sabbath isn't the first band to pull out of the festival due to circumstances beyond their control. Here are some more bands that were slated to play, but didn't make it to the festival.
]
Black Sabbath: With the pomp and circumstance surrounding their big announcement at the Whisky-a-Go-Go, it seemed like 2012 was going to be the year of Sabbath. However, it just wasn't meant to be, at least for this year. Here's to Iommi getting better and hoping that he, Ozzy and the rest of the crew are able to sweat their balls off in the desert in 2013.
The Clash: Returning to the scene of the precursor to Coachella, the early '80s US Festival, would have been a nice way for the British punks to return to America. Again, it just wasn't meant to be. The band was rumored to play in 2003, but unfortunately the iconic Joe Strummer died at the too young age of 50 of an undetected heart defect. If The Clash had reunited at Coachella, they would have been the biggest band to perform at the festival at that time.
Cocteau Twins: As one of the highly anticipated reunions of the 2005 edition, the band pulled out at the last minute. For those of you who don't remember, here's what Coachella sent out when it happened: It is with regret that Cocteau Twins announce they will not be performing at the Coachella Valley Music Festival on April 30th as had been planned. Due to personal reasons, member Elizabeth Fraser has decided that she is unable to participate in the reunion, and apologies for any inconvenience that this has caused. In other words, major bummer.
The Iceland volcano cancellations of 2010: It may seem like forever ago, but remember when those volcanoes were causing havoc in Europe? Flights were cancelled, passengers were stranded and new wave icon Gary Numan along with Talvin Singh and Hypnotic Bass Ensemble, the Cribs, Bad Lieutenant and Frightened Rabbit had put the kibosh on their sets since they couldn't escape the wrath of Mother Nature.
