Blitzen Trapper play a kind of revved-down, heart-on-your-flannel country rock like the Band, Townes Van Zandt or Wilco—musicians who wanted to peel off the first layer of what people call Americana and find the idiosyncratic American-isms inside, and maybe to put some pedal-steel guitar on top of a few of the songs, too. These are novellas that have chord changes instead of chapter breaks, and they make a very natural complement to the music of their Sub Pop label mate Avi Buffalo, who plays a solo acoustic set to open.
