Surely you have your own cherished personal memory of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait. Maybe something hilarious, something scary, something uncomfortable or something you just plain didn’t get at the time—because even with all the firestarting over-the-top insanity that marked his breakout in the '80s, Goldthwait always had a certain method to his madness, dedicated specifically to exploring the parts of the human experience marked “Here Be Monsters.” (There’s a reason they call Shakes the Clown the Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies, you know.) In recent years, he’s revealed himself as an able director via dark-beyond-dark films like Sleeping Dogs Lie and World’s Greatest Dad, with titles chosen for maximum twist-the-knife irony. But give him just a spotlight and a stage and he can dish out the strong stuff all by himself.
