After taking a semi-break from the world of stand-up to become a film and TV writer, producer, and director, Bobcat Goldthwait has decided lately to get back to his comedic roots. Not that he ever stopped being funny. January 3rd and 4th Bobcat is coming to the Brea Improv and if you loved him the last year when he came through OC (we sure did!), there is no doubt in our minds that you'll love him even more now. Before the weekend shenanigans go down, we had the chance to find out all about his new movie that we'll finally get a chance to see in 2014.

OC Weekly (Ali Lerman): I heard you were doing some stuff with Marc Maron. Is it for his TV show?
Bobcat Goldthwait: Yes, I directed some episodes of Marc Maron's TV shows on IFC. I just got done doing them. Hopefully the first season will go to Netflix too so people can get caught up.
I keep meaning to watch his show! It's like, there are so many “housewives” shows I forget everything else. I have bad taste in TV obviously.
Yeah, it gets hard. [Laughs.] You can't avoid it. We all pretend reality shows are terrible but then, we all get suckered in.
Thanks for trying to make me feel better. So last time I saw you in Brea you were showing me a trailer for your new movie “Willow Creek” and it's out now right?
Yeah! I've been all around the world at all of those genre film festivals with it. Now it'll come out in the U.S. sometime in the spring.
I've been reading good things about it, how do you think it's doing?
It's been really fun. When I go to the more prestigious film festivals, I'm the dirt bag that got into Sundance. But when I go to other festivals, I'm prestigious. So I've been really living it up! [Laughs.]
OK so I know the movie is about Bigfoot but can you break it down a little?
It's a horror and suspense movie but there are laughs in the first half of it also. I follow this couple around who is making a real cheap kind of documentary on the town of Willow Creek, which is the town that had footage shot in back in 1967. A lot of the actual people from the town are in the movie too. The couple in the movie is Alexie Gilmore and Bryce Johnson. They've been in some of my other movies and they're really good actors. I think a lot of people think that they're a couple in real life and I think that'll separate it too. Often in a lot of “found footage” films, the actors aren't very good or you don't relate to them as people. I think in a horror movie, since it's a lot scarier, you actually care about the people more when terrible things are happening to them. [Laughs.] Usually in horror films they have people who are disgusting so that when they die, you don't feel too bad. I did it the other way around in hopes that people will care.
I saw on Instagram that you got a Bigfoot tattoo. I assume you are a believer?
Oh yeah, that's the poster for the movie done by Alex Pardee that I got. And I say I'm a believer, and then people have a problem with it because I'm an Atheist. But I always answer that with, I know people that have seen Bigfoot and that's a lot different than God! [Laughs.]

Ha. I'm with you completely. Ok last film related question I swear. It seems like you've done movies in all genres except a musical. Any chance that's in the works for 2014?
I've been working on musical actually with Ray Davies of The Kinks. It's called “Schoolboys In Disgrace” and that's an album made in the 70's by The Kinks. Trish Sie, who choreographed the OK Go videos, she's the choreographer too. It takes a longer time than my other movies because it has a bigger budget but, we've been moving along with it so maybe it will happen. I've got a few things lined up for this year so hopefully I'll make one of them!
Now that it's 2014 can we please discuss that you still don't have a website and you're not on Twitter? And it's shocking that EVEREYONE seems to have a podcast and yet, you don't. What is your deal?
No, but I still go on a few pages that keep me up to date on reality shows and stuff. [Laughs.] I also just feel like there are some really brilliant podcasts out there but to just do a podcast where people sit and talk to each other about cracking jokes? I'm not really into it, there are already a million out there.
Agreed. They are getting so redundant at this point. Well I know that Brea is excited to kick off the New Year with you in the house. You were so great last year when you were there.
Well thank you, that's very sweet. You know there is a pressure to be a real jokester and I think a lot the expectation is that of nostalgia. Like I'm going to be just like my act from the 80's. I find that the more I do I stand-up, the more it's becoming me telling personal stories. I understand that it would make some people happy to be the same as I was back then, but for me, I choose to hope that I keep evolving.
