Since debuting at London's St. James Theatre on Valentine's Day in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest has proved to be one of those rare stories that is able to withstand the test of time and cultural evolution. Oscar Wilde's sharp wit and humor made him a famous playwright in Victorian London; today, his work can be viewed as the epitome of sophisticated but still fun and cleverly disguised dirty humor. But be warned: You will not find a single fart joke in this play. Not one. That may have just turned off about half of our readers, but for those of you who enjoy witty epigrams, haughty 19th-century farce and surprising plot twists (even by today's standards), The Importance of Being Earnest is a genuinely delightful literary romp.
