With a name like Cinco de Mayhem, you just know this one is going to be a corker. Featuring platter spinning and general zaniness courtesy of Long Beach DJ and impresario Mr. Todd, the Pike Bar will soon host a soiree complete with guest DJs (e.g. Mr. Todd and Fiends), film clips of mariachis and Mexican wrestling, student-produced animated shorts as well as a campy hodgepodge of music ranging from metal and polka to the occasional mariachi LP played on 45 speed. It’s a bizarre re-imagining of the centuries-old art form. Were he attending the event, mariachi icon Vicente Fernandez might be proud. But more likely, he would drown his sorrows in the Pike’s reasonable selection of imported beers.
