A partner of the Independent Television Service (an organization that supports independent filmmaking for public viewing on TV), the Carpenter Center hosts a series of free documentaries and guest speakers during its “Community Cinema” project. But fluffy subject matter, this ain't—topics of discussion include homophobia, racism, environmental issues and women's rights. This week's dive into the infuriating is a showing of The State of Arizona, a doc following the passing of SB1070, a bill that allowed law officials to check papers of community members on the suspicion that they might be illegal immigrants (ladies and gentlemen, this would be the racism segment of the program). The film is “full of drama and unexpected twists,” and the ability to boil the blood of every member in the audience.
