French recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician David Fray is no stranger to piano. Having started playing when he was four, you could say it’s his language—just another particle of his DNA. Of all the pieces of classical music in the world, one of his specialties is that of Robert Schumann, one of the greatest composers of the Romantic Era. But his latest release—called Fantaisie—consists of Franz Schubert’s late piano works. From “Piano Sonata in B Flat Major” to “Fantasia in F Minor,” Fray plays with such emotion and technical virtuosity that the sole sound of piano becomes large and cinematic.
