Each October the spirit world seeps out of their invisible dimension and runs wild in the streets for the Christian triduum of All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (Oct. 31 to Nov. 1)—three days that coincide with the Mexican-based holiday, Day of the Dead. Originating in the Aztec tribute festival to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, Day of the Dead celebrations have since spread from Brazil to Spain, and this year, Night Gallery joins the fun as downtown Santa Ana explodes in sugar skulls, marigolds and an assortment of offerings for the dearly departed. Featuring DOTD-themed artworks by 15 artists from around the country, including co-curators Robert Brown and Jeremy Cross, there’s sure to be a touch of the dark and demented as well, so slip out of your confining mortal coil and get some dead on.
