Devendra Banhart comes to OC with a wandering-troubadour backstory that took him from boho megacities like San Francisco and Paris to an official debut on Michael Gira’s Young God Records, which unfurled into a nice healthy career as probably the highest-profile and most versatile space/psych/folk rocker of his generation. Plenty of comparisons in his latest full-length What Will We Be to David Crosby, OC’s lost visionary Phil Pearlman and or even Skip Spence, but what he’s really loved for is his ability to make an atmosphere and make a moment at the same time. It’s that simultaneous flash of feeling and that aura of the otherworld that’ll make these Banhart songs last. With a full band, he thunders, but at this solo show, it’ll feel like just you, the spotlight and him.
