Law enforcement is seeking people who may have been victimized by a suspected flasher in Costa Mesa.
Brandon Alexis Mumtaz, 18, of Costa Mesa, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure and another of child annoyance, the Orange County District Attorney’s office announced.
Around 4:10 p.m. on Oct. 1, a young man standing behind a vehicle in an Orange Coast College parking lot exposed his penis to a female, who contacted the Costa Mesa Police Department later that day, the OCDA says.
Two days later, a second female was walking home from her high school when a young man in a vehicle pulled up next to her and started a chat while exposing his penis to her, say prosecutors, who add that she ran off to find help and the motorist drove off.
On Oct. 9, the Costa Mesa Police Department released a photo of the suspect vehicle captured from surveillance footage and requested the public’s help in identifying the flasher. Based on a tip from the community, Mumtaz was arrested two days later.
Scheduled to be arraigned at the Westminster courthouse on Nov. 8, Mumtaz could get two years in county jail and have to register as a sex offender if he is convicted at trial, the OCDA says.
And his penalty could conceivably get more severe if there are other victims, which is why prosecutors are asking anyone with information about other incidents involving Mumtaz to contact Costa Mesa Police Detective George Maridakis at (714) 754-5051.
