There must be something about winter in Norway that inspires the demonic-rock muses. Witness Oslo black-metal (not death-metal) band Dimmu Borgir. Though they unload salvos of dual bass with the ferocity of any group in any number of metal subgenres, they also sport a theatrical element integral to the black-metal sound. Rocking synthesizers mimic the sound of ominous trumpets, accompanied by the demonic vocals of singer Shagrath. The uninitiated listener may be induced to think the tribulation has begun. Our advice to those people: Try not to think about it too much. And have fun.
