For all of the plays centered on love stories and happy endings, there should be just as many on divorce (50 percent, right?)—though, would anyone want to see them? Although Dinner With Friends , the Pulitzer-winning tragi-comedy from Donald Margulies, is all about divorce and the devastation it causes, it is so exceptionally written and peppered with spot-on wit that the bitterness goes down pretty easy. The story of two couples (one going through a divorce, the other questioning their own marriage) is a raw introspection of the complexities of friendship, love and marriage. Only in the hands of such a capable playwright is this kind of potentially depressing material worth paying to see.
