Steven Dietz’ often-produced 1996 version of Bram Stoker’s original 1897 Dracula is known for being wedded to its source material. (Til death do they part…and beyond!) With plenty of Victoriana—including cask-strength Britishisms and some quality time in Dr. Seward’s asylum—and dialogue that revels in its own infernal majesty like “Your fear hemorrhages deliciously within you,” for instance—Dietz’s Dracula is a Dracula that kicks open the coffin lid and delivers the goods. No hyphenated self-awareness here, whether steam-punk or post-modern. Instead, this is Dracula on stage as the actual Dracula would most likely prefer to see himself on stage: stately, wry and very by the book.
