For the most part, Peter Shaffer's '70s theater production, Equus, remained under the radar the last few decades—that is, until good ol' Daniel Radcliffe signed onto the 2007 revival and, in one scene, showed everyone his magic wand. It's the story of an existentially conflicted psychiatrist and his working relationship with a young patient who has a religious, sexual fascination with horses. Shaffer wrote the play after hearing of a teenager's violent outburst that led the the blinding of six horses in a small English town—he imagined a series of events leading up to the assault, thus Equus came to light. But horse-worshipping nude boys and animal torture aside, this play takes a deep look into our own sense of purpose and idea of “normal.” One thing is certain, a night of “normal” theater, this is not.
