A father and son are facing charges of attempted murder on a police officer and other serious felonies for their alleged attack on a 17-year veteran of the Huntington Beach Police Department.
Darryl Headrick, 58, and Bryce Headrick, 23, both of Huntington Beach, were held in city jail after Tuesday’s 11:20 p.m. incident, according to Officer Jennifer Marlatt.
Besides attempted murder, the Headricks face charges of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and resisting arrest, the police department’s spokeswoman said.
The officer, whose name was not released, stopped a bicyclist for a traffic violation near Beach Boulevard and Clay Avenue, where a second male bicyclist came up behind and punched the cop in the head, Marlatt said.
As the officer tried unsuccessfully to defend himself with a stun gun, both men pummeled the cop, who was punched and kicked in the head, Marlatt alleged.
A woman who had been on a police ride-along got out of the car and shouted at the men to stop, prompting them to ride away, Marlatt said.
Numerous officers responded to a radio call for help from the officer, and the elder Headrick, identified as the second bicyclist, was quickly arrested in the immediate area, said Marlatt, who added the younger Headrick was arrested several hours later.
The injured officer was released from an area hospital the same day.
