While flying a kite at Huntington City Beach last April, 6-year-old Seth Richardson fell backward into a fire pit and suffered third degree burns.
His father, Jason Richardson, is now suing the city because the fire pit was broken. Photos taken by police officers show that the particular pit was damaged–an entire side of it had deteriorated into the sand. Jason wants $500,000 to cover his son's medical bills, the Orange County Register reports.

The suit is bad news for those who love the pits and all the s'mores and fireside makeout sessions that come with them. Some city officials have been trying to remove the pits for years to help with budget cuts.
In Newport Beach, the City Council could vote tonight on whether to remove 60 fire pits from city beaches.
In the meantime, a quick warning to all parents: Fire is hot.
