Sunday, the last day of the weekend, usually consists of continuing your consumption of alcohol preferable mimosas, bloody marys or micheladas to avoid hangovers from previous nights of fun. In OC, Curious Entertainment helps make your Sundays the best kind of Fundays with their Firme Sundays Event. For three years, the event’s celebration of old school chicano culture has always been alive in Santa Ana at various local Santa Ana venues/bars like Bar Ellipsis, The Yost Theater, McFadden Marketplace and Copper Door. This May, Firme Sundays will take place for the first time at The House Of Blues In Anaheim inside the Foundation Room.
‘It was never a matter of if but a matter of when” George Sanchez the Founder of Curious Entertainment says about the new venue. “It was three years ago, I was standing in the middle of third street in Downtown SanTana for the Dia De Los Muertos Event” Sanchez recalls. “I was drunk holding a Corona beer can in my hand and I just thought ‘This is what a Sunday is supposed to be, good times, being with family and community, a cold beer, oldies, making memories…the rest was history.” After that day, Sanchez remembers reaching out to his 4,000 plus friends and followers on Facebook posting “Firme Sunday.. coming soon.” Immediately his post began to get attention, people asking what Firme Sundays would be, asking when it would be, others giving support and saying they would attend without any details. At that moment Sanchez had no idea that his idea would manifest into such a high demanded event.
The Firme Sundays event have been a huge success since its start three years ago at the Downtown SanTana Yost Theatre. Since then, Sanchez has also received many requests to travel out to San Diego, Los Angeles, Riverside and Las Vegas. “There has been quiet a few that have taken our Firme Sunday concept but we see imitation as a compliment and we always try to stay a couple steps ahead of the game,” Sanchez says. “We have a lot of new excited things coming out this year.” While sitting in his home office, letting several calls ring through to voicemail. “You see my phone blowing up? It’s all business, artists, news networks, venues, promoters, fans, sponsors, sales, staff, family. Im at that point in my career that I’ll look back at and say ‘I invested everything and it all paid off.”
Though in the past Firme Sundays Curious Entertainment has been known to bring out old school chicano actors and actresses like ’90s Chicana film stars—Mousie (Seidy López) and Sad Girl (Angel Aviles) cast members from the 1993 movie Mi Vida Loca. Famous characters like Cruzito, Popeye and Spider from the cast of the 1993 movie Blood In Blood Out, have also made cameos at the event. This May 6th at The Foundation Room Curious Entertainment will have their All-Star DJ’s, including DJOmargod, Cancunjoey, Mr.Fana, BigFrankPeña who will spin oldies and funk along with a special performance from the 1970’s American rhythm and blues band Sly, Slick and Wicked. Surely they’ll be performing some of their hits like Confessin’ A Feeling, Tonight’s The Night and Sho’ Nuff to name a few.
“We [Curious Entertainment Team] just want folks to come down and have a firme sunday, grab a beer, dance to some good tunes and unwind after a rowdy weekend. You’re only going to get something like this at Firme Sunday or the Swap meet but I guarantee you The Foundation Room at The House of Blues is the place to be.” Pre Ticket start at $10 and because space is limited and the word is out, tickets are selling quickly.
