Many California gays (and non-gays) celebrated this week's federal appellate court ruling upholding a district court decision that found Prop. 8 violates the U.S. Constitution.
Those waving rainbow-colored flags have another reason to celebrate: a gay man made the presidential ballot in California.
No, not Rick Santorum, silly, but Laguna Beach's Fred Karger.
]
Karger, a former Republican hatchet man who is now trying to change his party from the inside, joins Santorum, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Buddy Roemer on California's June 5 primary election ballot.
Our June 2 cover boy is happy to be formally invited to the dance, although what Karger would really like is a date with a certain podium, saying in a statement: “I am thrilled to be on my home state's ballot. Now if Fox News, CNN, NBC and the other networks would include me in their future debates, there would be a fresh new moderate candidate among a pretty mediocre field of Republicans. Just let me in one debate.”
If by miracle of miracles Karger wins big in the Golden Tan State, and
the former Pennsylvania senator finishes a distant second, I'm
trademarking the headline “Gay Man Smears Santorum” before Dan Savage can get to it.
