In 2010 I reviewed a great hot dog joint in Long Beach called The Dog House. It served all manner of sausages on great bread. Around the same time another joint called Dog Haus opened in Pasadena. The Dog House shuttered after less than two years, but Dog Haus prospered, expanding to two other outlets and started to franchise.
The first OC franchise was in Santa Ana at Westfield Mainplace. Now Long Beach is getting a Dog Haus at The Promenade at 210 East 3rd Street, complete with a Biergarten.
Today, for its official grand opening, Long Beach’s new Dog Haus will give way a free Haus Dog per guest from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
If you’ve not eaten at Dog Haus yet, expect hot dogs and sausages topped with sautéed onions and the usual accoutrements. The one pictured above is called the Scott Baioli. Burgers are also on the menu, with Hawaiian roll buns and housemade fries on the side.
As for The Dog House? Well, it’s unlikely you remember it. Its location on 2nd Street became a BBQ joint for short time, then Roe Restaurant before that shuttered too.
Before becoming an award-winning restaurant critic for OC Weekly in 2007, Edwin Goei went by the alias “elmomonster” on his blog Monster Munching, in which he once wrote a whole review in haiku.
