Long Beach’s Free Moral Agents are one of the most consistently interesting bands in the city—capable and confident psychonauts whose long-form songs bloom and diffuse between the discographies of out-there musicians like Can, Pink Floyd, Fela Kuti and Sonic Youth, whose “Little Trouble Girl” is revived with exceptional vigor by the Agents and their singer Mendee Ichikawa. Casual fans may know Free Moral Agents as keyboardist Ikey Owens’ personal project—as opposed to his other projects like Mars Volta—but this is a fearless and coherent unit held together by as much technique as telepathy. They’re in residence all this month at Detroit Bar, where underrated rapper Existereo supports and probably shares a song or two with them this week.
Mondays, 9 p.m. Starts: Dec. 5. Continues through Dec. 26, 2011
