Now a concrete three-piece, Future Islands is enjoying some positive press for their first full length under the new structure, the Chester Endersby Gwazda-produced In Evening Air (Thrill Jockey), and also as new Baltimore residents. Their sound is zoney, minimal electro laced with eccentric quirks—hypnotizing beats courtesy of J. Gerrit Welmers’ mechanical stylings on drums and synth—they call it “post-wave,” a conglomeration of new wave’s fragile sentiments with the raw energy of post punk. Samuel T. Herring’s soulful, grainy vocals add imperative texture to otherwise flawlessly smooth instrumentation—all nailed down by William Cashion’s anchoring bass lines. Genre-morphing aside, we recommend songs “In the Fall (feat. Katrina Ford)” and “Tin Man,” both prime examples of Future Islands’ catalogue. Don’t miss them at Detroit Bar for a great mid-week show.
