It’s been known for decades that animation is a medium just as valid as any, from the surreal sexuality of Fritz the Cat to grown men crying like little girls over Toy Story 3. The 90-minute compilation film Gallery of Animation aims to explore this potential, showcasing a diversity of subject matter and format—old-school hand-drawn animation, computer-generated animation, stop-motion animation and what they’ve described as “experimental animation.” It’s 24 shorts independently produced by animators including Walter Santucci, creator of The Evil Cat, and Corky Quakenbush, whose work has appeared on MADtv and sports a name tailor-made for whimsical endeavors. Titles include Love Pills, Transparent Movement and Ricardo Discovers Sex, ensuring that it will be an esoteric evening all around.
