From Elizabeth Keckley's 1868 memoir, Behind the Scenes:
Slavery had its dark side as well as its bright side.
Truly, a classic of understatement.
And now, the most recent example.
From this morning's Reg story “Putting a price on a home”:
… Californians are mindful of the surge in housing costs in recent years.
Mindful? Really? Yes, the Reg is willing to go out on a limb, and state that people have noticed what's happened to real estate prices. But only because there's a new study.
The U.S. Census Bureau releases a slew of data today on how Americans are housed, how much they pay for it and what they think it's worth.
The data, from the 2005 American Community Survey, show that Californians are mindful of the surge in housing costs in recent years.
It's that sort of bold and insightful reporting that's gotten the Orange County Register where it is today.
If you want to wander through the numbers (“Only four of the top 50 cities in terms of perceived home value are outside California. Eight of the top 30 cities are in Orange County.”), the story is here.
This has been Great Moments in Understatement.
