Jesus Christ has been glorified through art for the past two millennia, from the paintings of Michelangelo to the filmmaking of Mel Gibson, but it can be argued that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, is one of the oddest odes out there. Coming in the midst of the post-hippie Christian boom of the early '70s (see also ‘Spirit in the Sky'), Superstar presents Jesus as seen from Judas' perspective-a potentially flawed individual whose growing popularity may be diluting his spiritual message. Though ultimately a reinforcement of Christ's divinity, the musical offers a unique interpretation of the New Testament. Christian theology and rock music? Now, that's a good night at the theater.
