Irvine’s historic Duck Club might seem an unlikely site for a talk on human trafficking in OC, but then the prosecution by the feds of an Irvine family keeping a twelve-year-old girl slave in their garage surprised people, too. And how about the work of the politically progressive feminist women’s forum hosting the event? Women For: Orange County’s always reliably surprising general meeting this month features Sherri Harris of the Salvation Army speaking on her own work and OC’s Task Force on Human Trafficking, which provides refuge and support for victims of forced sexual exploitation and labor. Harris identifies our fair county as a shameful “destination point” for this perverse trade in humanity, and challenges us to remove it from that particular map.
