In These Great Times…

Taking selected readings from The Last Days of Mankind by Karl Kraus (whom many proclaim the greatest satirist of the 20th Century) and pairing them with a score from the Long Beach Opera’s The Good Soldier Schweik , this musical and literary event ups the ante on military satire. Kraus, who ran his brilliant musings in his magazine, Die Fackel (The Torch) , at the start of World War I, predicted the end of humanity due to the media’s deceiving coverage of war, the manipulation of language and the misuse of power by those who wield it. Sure, the world is rife with war satire these days, but few contain whoppers such as “We have in common with our enemies only the stupidity of holding one and the same God responsible for the outcome of the war, instead of ourselves for the decision to wage it.”
