It’s officially the first weekend of summer and the Irvine Police Department isn’t wasting any time taking chances with sloshed drivers. They’ll be conducting a sobriety checkpoint tonight between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Whereabouts? Drivers will find themselves lined up at the clearly marked checkpoint around the area of Alton Parkway and Culver Drive.
That’s where Irvine police are going to inform people of the dangers of driving under the influence of booze or drugs. If a cop suspects a driver to be impaired (the reek of gin breath is always a dead giveaway), they’ll be taken to another area for further evaluation.
Irvine police tout publicized checkpoints as an effective way to curb drunk driving while encouraging safe behaviors like finding a designated driver or calling a Lyft.
Tonight’s DUI checkpoint is brought to you by grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
