John Doe of X and Jill Sobule, the creator if the original I Kissed a Girl
from the '80s, are rolling into Orange County to celebrate the release
of their first recorded collaboration (check out the full album stream
below.) The longtime friends released their album, A Day at the Pass,
with the help of some dedicated fans: The album is completely
fan-funded. Donators were able to watch the creation of the album
virtually the whole way through.

It was recorded in front of a live audience at the Pass, an old recording studio in LA, before it shut down. Fans got a behind-the-scenes look at the band's set up, arrangement, run through, performance, and recording. The set included some favorites from both of the artists, a few new ones, and some covers such as “Never My Love.” Nine songs made it on to the album. They enlisted the help of some friends on the songs: Don Was on bass, Doug Pettibone on pedal steel, electric guitar, banjo, and mandolin.
Throughout their 15-year friendship, Doe and Sobule have toured together several times. They would alternate who would open and who would finish. Doe said in a press release, “Since Jill is the most charming, endearing performer on the planet, it was terrifying & a bonafide drag to go on after she had completely engaged and stunned the audience. Regardless, we always had the best of times during these outings.” This time around, they will co-headline their shows and play their brand of boot-tapping country rock together.
Keep an eye out for Doe's next solo release, Keeper, out on Aug 30.
Doe and Sobule are set to play The Hootenanny rockabilly festival in Irvine on July 2. They continue on to the Coach House on July 7.
When not running the OCWeekly.com and OC Weekly’s social media sites, Taylor “Hellcat” Hamby can be found partying like it’s 1899.
