Though still largely a male-dominated genre, the fairer sex has proven to be just as capable—and equally foul-mouthed—on the standup stage the past decade, what with the emergence of comedians such as Ellen DeGeneres, Lisa Lampanelli, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes. But any shortlist of great ladies of laughs has to include Kathy Griffin, who started performing decades ago as a member of the Los Angeles-based Groundlings comedy troupe. HBO specials, sitcom and film appearances (catch her blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in Pulp Fiction), an Emmy Award-winning reality-TV series, and a host of turns as awards presenter and emcee have kept her profile high ever since. And though she's elicited a lot of controversy for her celebrity-bashing and anti-Sarah Palin material, Griffin, like DeGeneres, has stayed atop the comedy world by keeping her act fairly clean.
