President Obama has spoken: his favorite track of 2015 is Kendrick Lamar’s “How Much A Dollar Cost.”
“It’s a true story,” Kendrick told MTV News. “These are moments in my life deeper than just handing somebody a dollar. These are actually moments of integrity, actually being able to talk to somebody. Me talking to him was simply a thank you from God. And I felt God speaking through him to get at me.”
Lamar's politically-charged and poetic style has caught fire this year. The rapper earned eleven Grammy nominations, placing him second only to Michael Jackson, who earned twelve nominations for Thriller in 1984. We're hopeful Lamar can match Jackson's eight Grammy Award wins, including Album of the Year.
Surprising things you may not know about Lamar: his last name is Duckworth; he stuttered as a child; he currently lives in a modest condo “not far from his old neighborhood”; he is engaged to his high school sweetheart; and he will eat Lunchables while on tour.
“I’ll always be K.Dot out in the hood and to my homies,” Lamar told Bullet Magazine. “But using my real name is symbolic of me showing people who I really am.”
The 58th Grammys will air live on February 15, 2016, from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
