The untrained eye might assume Los Campesinos! were a rock en español outfit, but it’s simply a clever name in the tradition of Yo La Tengo. What is significant in the Welsh band’s name is that ever-present exclamation point: many of their hard-charging noisy pop tunes seem to simply explode with playful energy, as seen throughout 2008’s We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. The name’s also a reflection of the wry humor that you kinda expect from quirky Brits: “tolerance is more appealing in theory than in practice,” they sing on “Ways to Make It Through the Wall.” Los Campesinos! is currently touring behind their latest full-length, this January’s Romance Is Boring, which Gareth Campesinos! (the whole band goes by the same adopted surname) describes as being about “death and football.”
