Pity Jane Kaczmarek. Brilliant as the mom on Malcolm in the Middle from 2000-06–she was nominated for a Golden Globe three times and an Emmy seven times–the Milwaukee-born actress would go on to see her co-star (and three-time Emmy nominee for Malcolm) Bryan Cranston not only win three consecutive Emmys for Breaking Bad but appear in support in every other movie out of Hollywood. At least we get to see Kaczmarek make a dramatic turn on a big screen in Laguna Beach tonight.

In Lost on Purpose, she plays a San Joaquin Valley dairy farmer trying to prevent the buy-out of her property while her workers search for their purpose in life. Laguna Beach Film Society presents the movie, which is preceded by a reception at 6 p.m. at Laguna Art Museum, the screening at 7 at South Coast Cinema and a post-movie Q&A with writers-directors Eshom Nelms and Ian Nelms.
The lead-in for the indie drama is Together We Can Create World Peace from local student Emily Baker. Presented by My Hero Project, Baker's documentary short is about the monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery of Tibet who visit Laguna Beach each year to spread their message of peace through painting. Together, they create a sand painting called a mandala in a ritual symbolizing their teachings.
Tickets to the event from the film society, which is a Laguna Art Museum council, are: $20 for the screening and reception; $8 for the screening only pre-sale; $10 for the screening only at the door; and $5 for students. Members get in free.
