Matthew Jacob Granados, the 21-year-old wanted by Santa Ana Police in Sunday's fatal shooting of a 16-year-old, turned himself in late last night.
Granados showed up at the Tustin Police Department around 11 p.m., according to Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, who added the suspect was booked on suspicion of manslaughter “with a weapon enhancement.”
As we reported yesterday, investigators were originally told Alex Adrian Ramirez was shot in a drive-by at Granados' home in the 3600 block of West Hazard Avenue. The teen, who suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso, was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Police say the witness statements did not jibe with the evidence, so a search for Granados began. His father, mother and brother were taken in for questioning, and a weapon believed used in the shooting was found in their home.
The suspect's dad, Alexander Christopher Granados, was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory after the killing.
Lydia Granados, the suspect's mother, turned up on local television Tuesday urging her son to turn himself in.
She also offered a new version of what happened: The victim and her son, who was holding a gun, fell asleep and Granados accidentally shot Ramirez while still in slumber.
Granados was arrested last year on suspicion of carjacking, and detectives at the time said they believed he may have been responsible for additional robberies along the Santa Ana River Bed and the west end of Santa Ana.
