Rarely performed in its full-scale production, Flames of Paris is an over-the-top display of ballet mastery conceived by composer Boris Asafyev and originally choreographed by the renowned Vasily Vainonen. Based around the French Revolution, when Flames of Paris first debuted in 1932, it was thought of as slightly radical—today, it is the epitome of theatrical classical ballet. Tonight marks the start of Segerstrom's 2014-2015 International Dance Series, as well as the West Coast debut of the Mikhailovsky Ballet, hailing from St. Petersburg. There are battle scenes, grand balls, a hundred powdered wigs, fiery revolutionaries, and the most awe-inspiring dance we've seen all year. Several performances throughout the weekend give ballet fans a chance to see this at least once. Bonus: Get to the theater an hour early for a preview talk by Mikhail Messerer, choreographer-in-chief of the Mikhailovsky Ballet.
