A lauded film about efforts to prevent mass extinction on this planet tonight kicks off a three-event partnership between Orange County for Climate Action and Coast Community College District organizations.
Racing Extinction, which was directed by diver/filmmaker/still photographer/paleontologist Louie Psihoyos (Oscar winner The Cove), rolls at 6:30 this evening in the Orange Coast College Science Hall in Costa Mesa. Admission is free and open to the public.
The film gives a sobering look at the world’s endangered aquatic species. Psihoyos includes images that show the methane spewing into our air—a large part from farting cattle—is harming man and other species. His crew also infiltrates Chinese criminal dens that carve up and sell endangered species, such as shark and whale. Like The Cove, Racing Extinction is a chilling call to action.
Joining Orange County for Climate Action (OCCA) in presenting the free screening are Golden West College Peace Studies Program, Orange Coast College Future of Energy Club, Coast Colleges District Student Council and Orange Coast College. Two of the college groups have also partnered with OCCA to present—on Earth Day appropriately enough—the 2016 Golden West College Peace, Justice & Sustainability Conference. The keynote speaker will be the Farm Sanctuary president and co-founder Gene Baur, who speaks the following day at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, in another event brought to you by the same partnership.
Bestselling author Baur’s latest book is Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer and Feeling Better Every Day, in which he shares lessons learned from 30 years of extensive travel, promoting awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and the cheap food system. His Farm Sanctuary, America’s leading farm animal protection organization, helps thousands of animals at its three sanctuaries in California and New York. Time Magazine has called Baur “the conscience of the food movement.”
Fittingly, the 10th annual conference running from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 22, in the Golden West College Student Center in Huntington Beach is a “zero-waste event.” Your $25 pre-registration fee (or $40 at the door) includes a vegan breakfast, lunch and all conference materials. For more details and registration, visit goldenwestcollege.edu/peace.
Earth Day continues Saturday, April 23, at 9:30 a.m. in the Black Box Theatre of Soka University, where Baur speaks on “Eating in Harmony with our Values.” Afterward, a vegan picnic lunch outside on the lawn will be available for $10.
