Every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite our endless advances in technology and science, growing by leaps and bounds every year, this is one battle we just can't seem to win. But we're getting closer.
This Sunday, the fight against breast cancer will continue at Alex's Bar. Cara Connor, a teacher for the Long Beach Unified School District, has organized a benefit concert to raise money for her participation in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk this September. The donation is a mere $5, but I know you can spare more than that. I've seen you spend more than $5 on a cocktail, for chrissakes. The musical lineup will include Moe Dog Darling, Forcefield On, the Deadly Finns, Say No to Microchip and Repeater.
“Sometimes benefit shows can be ragtag,” says Steve Krolikowski from Repeater. “It can be hard to get people to go because the bands can be too diverse, but this show is organized well, the lineup is cohesive.” It promises to be a good show, not only musically but karmically as well. “It's a fun opportunity that has some sort of meaning, raising a little bit of awareness,” says Krolikowski.
The benefit starts at 7 p.m. and goes until about midnight. Here's a sobering thought: While you're there, counting every three minutes, 100 women will be diagnosed with the life-threatening disease.
Seriously, people: Let's find a cure already.
