No. 5: Taquiza from Soho Taco

Next Thursday night, loyal readers: hie thee to your nearest
distributor of dead-tree versions of this illustrious publication next
Thursday night to see what we, your arbiters of taste (*COUGH*) have
chosen for this year's Best Of issue.

I think I've contracted Soho Taco to do three taquizas for me this year, maybe more–I forget. All I know is when I gather enough pennies and have enough people to enjoy a bunch of tacos, I call these guys–and they never fail to impress me, even after the 12th taco consumed in half an hour.
]

I named them the second-best restaurant in Orange County last year–this, even though all they have at the moment is a taco cart. But they've stepped it up even further in 2011, adding freshly made tortillas to their retinue (after an embarrassing experience with Bill Esparza of Street Gourmet LA–ask them about it!) of heirloom tomato pico de gallo, the freshest cuts of meat imaginable (because the Zambrano boyos who run this also help run their family's carnicería) and combining their ingredients into fat, gorgeous tacos. Carne asada seeps bovine beauty; the veggie option finds onions and peppers sauteed to the point of caramelization; chicken is actually juicy and flavorful, and not the boring nubs of too many steam trays. They'll make a quesadilla from sharp queso añejo, shrimp tacos for a summer day, and burn your ass when you're not paying attention for their seemingly tame, actually brutal yellow salsa. And all the while they do it with smiles and fast AND crack jokes and blast music while they're at it.

Can't afford Soho for a taquiza? Fear not: they're coming out with a lonchera soon–details to come…
