British culture, like any other, abounds with a unique menagerie of stereotypes. Among the more predominate, is the case of those infamous British choppers. (Remember when Lisa Simpson’s dentist, dissatisfied with the diligence of Ralph Wiggum’s brushing, traumatized the young lad by exposing him to the Big Book of British Smiles?) One of the more tenacious stereotypes about those wacky Brits is their uptight and stuffy attitudes, which are notoriously dry in matters of wit and sexuality. The Long Beach Playhouse presents an exploration of this phenomenon with its production of No Sex Please, We’re British. First produced for England’s stage in the early ‘70s, the story focuses on the misadventures of a young British couple engaged to be wed. The nascent lovers become unintentionally inundated with mountains of mail-ordered Scandinavian pornography and must hide the compromising material from visiting in-laws and business associates. Sounds rather cheeky, and unlike British cuisine, sinfully delicious.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: June 18. Continues through July 17, 2010
