Irvine-based life coach Anita K’s newest book, Behaving Bravely: How to Mindshift Life’s Challenges, is a step-by-step guide to managing and maneuvering life’s tricky ups and downs. She provides not only personal, real-life anecdotes, but also detailed exercises and coping mechanisms to overcome any pressure or hardship.

Anita started her journey in life coaching almost 12 years ago while in corporate HR. During this time, Anita underwent several challenges in her personal life that came with a harsh awakening.

“I realized when I was going through these issues I didn’t have the life skills to cope as an adult,” said Anita.

It wasn’t until a decade after this dark period that Anita dedicated herself to finding and discovering the best coping mechanisms, and then she felt her life was truly coming back together.

“I adopted some internal conversations within myself about behaving bravely,” Anita said. This “behaving bravely” mindset soon became her main motto as an individual, a life coach and throughout her most recent book.

Anita officially dedicated herself to personal development and life coaching in 2017 after much in-depth and personal research as to how she could improve her own life. She then decided to reach out to others in her community, focusing on cultural identity, career, and stress management—concepts and matters highlighted throughout her book.

Calling it a “self-development memoir,” Anita includes her personal recollections as well as those of some of her clients in Behaving Bravely. The book also offers several coaching techniques and contemplation exercises readers can easily utilize in their daily lives.

BRAVE, an acronym for Anita’s life-coach technique, stands for Benevoliefs (a term she has coined that combines the words benevolent and beliefs), Readiness, Alignment, Vision and Engagement. Through this practice, Anita helps clients and readers set a roadmap for personal development and growth.

“I felt it was really important for me to show my own story because I kind of view myself as ‘the life coach next door’— I’m your average person who goes through a multitude of problems. [I] don’t always have the answer, but I’m willing to do my best to turn things around,” said Anita.

Among the topics covered in her book are divorce, financial devastation, addiction and gender disorder. Anita believes Behaving Bravely is applicable to all individuals, no matter their personal issues or concerns.

Anita is currently juggling life coaching with her corporate HR career. She hopes to extend her life-coach course in the future and pitch Behaving Bravely as a cinematic project.
