“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” This quote by poet Robert Burns struck a deep chord with John Steinbeck—and caused the author to title his now-famous (though once a recurrent target of censors) novel Of Mice and Men, a classic tale of the working-class struggle. Set in the post-depression era, the tragic story tells of George and the simple-minded yet unintentionally dangerous Lennie, a giant man with a deep love for soft things. In this theatrical adaptation, the play finds the two farm-hands continually fighting for their little piece of the American dream while trying to live “off the fatta’ the land.” As their delusions continue, George and Lennie try to keep their humanity, innocence and friendship intact.
