Recently named one of the “Top 10 Comics to Watch” by Variety, Piff the Magic Dragon brings magical tricks, illusions and his chihuahua sidekick Mr. Piffles to Segerstrom Center for the Arts Sept. 27-28 as a part of his Lucky Dragon Tour.
Suitable for audiences of all ages (but, as rated by the performer himself, more of a PG/PG-13 type of show), UK-born John van der Put says, as Piff, his Segerstrom debut will include smart jokes for adults in the audience as well as child-friendly antics.
“We’ll be bringing a mix of new magic tricks and old favorites to the Segerstrom,” Piff said during a recent phone interview.
Known for his one-of-a-kind interactive programs, Piff includes lots of audience participation in his tricks and illusions, making each show a completely unique experience. With each spectacle tied to a previous anecdote or tale, audiences can expect an unexpectedly lively show.
“Every single night is different; we’re using different people, we’re doing different things, they have different relationships,” Piff says. “So, it ends up being kind of like an improv show as much as a magic show and as much as a comedy show.”
Already known for his comical and witty magic performances back on America’s Got Talent in 2010, Piff has taken over the main stage at Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, where he has performed more than 300 shows this year, many of them sellouts.
“Leave all your worries and concerns out the door and just have a little break from an hour and a half with a dragon and a dog,” Piff says of his upcoming Costa Mesa performances.
Piff the Magic Dragon at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Samueli Theater, 600 Town Center Dr., Costa Mesa, (714) 556-2787; scfta.org. Fri.-Sat., Sept. 27-28, 7 & 9 p.m. $39-$89.
