Though they take their name from the famous Smiths song, don’t expect San Antonio-based Girl In a Coma to be a musical hagiography to the much-revered Morrissey. Leaving that task to cover bands, the all-Latina indie-punk outfit alternate between emotive ballads and energetic songs to carve out their unique and infectious sound. Powered by the talented vocals of lead singer Nina Diaz, Girl In a Coma’s live performances are so impressive that the legendary Joan Jett signed them to her label, Blackheart Records, after seeing the women in action for the first time. The Texas Trio have since gone on to release their debut album, Both Before I’m Gone, and are currently touring with Tegan and Sara. Prepare yourself . . . they’ve been known to wake the half-dead.
