Big things for Alaska-by-way-of-sleeping-five-per-minivan-in-Portland band Portugal. The Man, who recently signed to the same label as Led Zeppelin and put out a striking, obsessively sophisticated album called In The Mountain In The Cloud, that respectfully wraps itself in the happy-sad glitter-glam rock ‘n’ roll of Marc Bolan and especially David Bowie. Call it Portugal Stardust—songs like “So American” and “Head is a Flame” twin T. Rex and the Spiders from Mars in sound and spirit, slick with Tony Visconti strings and melody upon melody and bristling with the kind of passionately detached lyrics you’d hear in “Five Years.” Definitely a gas!
