As a guest star on The Simpsons, John Waters tried to explain to Homer the meaning of camp, “The tragically ludicrous? The ludicrously tragic?” he offered. Though Homer may have thought the king of camp was talking about dead clowns, he got the meaning dead-on. This 1987 play was written by drag queen Charles Busch, who plays the lead role of a teenage girl, Chicklet. She's dying to fit in and become a surfer chick through the whirlwind of raging hormones, periodic blackouts, and multiple personality disorder. But when several men mysteriously turn up dead, all fingers point to Chicklet. While the play mocks '60's surf flicks as well as cheap horror films, Psycho Beach Party makes sure to take every opportunity for a cheesy sexual innuendo.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 23. Continues through Oct. 30, 2011
When not running the OCWeekly.com and OC Weekly’s social media sites, Taylor “Hellcat” Hamby can be found partying like it’s 1899.
