Why do we have spring fever this late in the year? Must be because chanteuse/diva/songstress/international vocal-jazz sensation Miss Sophie Milman is singing. Smart, sexy and eclectic, Milman, 25, is majoring in commerce at the University of Toronto. Her story seems contrived, hyped and full of industry adjectives, but it’s all true. Born in Russia, moved to Israel, discovered after a couple of gigs and quickly signed, the drop-dead gorgeous Milman sings cabaret, standards, chanson, ballads, Beatles and Stevie Wonder, gospel, and soul in four languages. With this voice, she could sing the telephone book (the Jerusalem, Toronto, Moscow or Paris telephone book) and sell the record, but luckily, she has chosen more traditional fare as evidenced by her two amazing CDs—her eponymous debut and last year’s Make Someone Happy.
