Rapper 2Mex is going through a lot lately. Recently, the co-founding member of revered LA hip-hop group The Visionaries suffered complications from diabetes resulting in the amputation of his right leg from the knee down. The Weekly learned of the shocking news via a Go Fund Me page set up by fellow Visionaries member Key Kool, who is urging 2Mex’s supporters to donate towards the impending medical bills and recovery for “the hardest working man in underground hip-hop.”
“If you know 2Mex personally, or through his work, you know that he has the biggest heart and puts everything he has into his music and into helping others,” Kool writes. Since the early ’90s, 2Mex (born Alejandro Ocano Jr.) has remained a permanent fixture in west coast underground hip-hop, including his time in the Good Life Cafe scene and open mic workshop Project Blowed in LA. His family of crews and collaborators is vast— groups like Of Mexican Descent, Mindclouders, SonGodSuns, The Afterlife, The Shape Shifters, The Returners, Look Daggers (with the late Ikey Owens), Grimm Image, and others. The rapper has also been throwing concerts and has the 2Mex Hologram Podcast, and the 2Mex Hologram Radio Show on 93.5 KDAY. Earlier this month, he performed as part of the grand opening of The Juice hip-hop night at DTSA Underground.
Despite the unfortunate news, the continued outpouring of support for the rapper is immense. Yesterday, it was reported that the level of donations toward his medical bills has surpassed the initial Go Fund Me goal of $15,000 in one day. The goal is now raised to $25,000 with the hopes of paying for as much of 2Mex’s medical care as possible.
“Alex is understandably emotional and overwhelmed by the love and support from everyone and it’s now more than ever that he needs this positive energy to get him on the path to recovery and rehabilitation.”
A benefit concert for 2Mex is currently in the works with all proceeds going towards the rapper’s rehabilitation and recovery.
