If you’ve been involved in local DIY punk music within the last five or ten years, there’s a good chance you’ve been in the same room with Randy Randall, whether he was playing guitar in one of his turn-of-the-millennium hardcore bands, toppling off a monitor in No Age or exploring one of his solo soundscapes. And now he’s got his new project Rat Fist, a collaboration with cross-country collaborator Sean McGuinness, of Sub Pop’s Flipper-ized Pissed Jeans. Together, they pry their gnarly Rat Fist sound out of the nastier part of the SST Records discography, making politicized punk/hardcore songs in which nothing about the genre is necessarily a given, with drums and guitar both constantly on the edge of explosion. It’s heavy stuff—don’t let it fall directly on you.
