Chapman University's 2008 Visiting Writers Series begins with David Unger reading from his second novel, In My Eyes, You Are Beautiful. He's introduced by SoCal sci-fi fabulist James Blaylock ( The Rainy Season ) as part of this John Fowles Center for Creative Writing event. If that's not enough literary name-dropping to get you to campus, you'll be further impressed that, besides his debut saga about a Jewish-Guatemalan family ( Life in the Damn Tropics ), Unger has translated poets Nicanor Parra of Chile and Roque Dalton of El Salvador, teaches, writes short stories, and wins all kinds of prizes. Or maybe you'd appreciate knowing that Unger's appearance kicks off a half-dozen readings by other distinguished international writers including Ukrainian, Argentine and British scribes, with a very big name-Salman Rushdie-in March.
