The Colbert Report
11:30 p.m.
Comedy Central
This is consistently the funniest faux news show on TV (sorry, Jon Stewart), and we're not just saying that because Colbert's guest tonight is the Weekly's own Gustavo Arellano. That would be self serving and unethical. No, the reason we chose tonight other than any other night to highlight Colbert's program is because his guest tonight is the Weekly's own Gustavo Arellano. See the difference? We're going to take an educated guess and say that like newspapers, radio shows and real news programs throughout the country, Colbert wants to interview Arellano about his muy popularito Ask a Mexican! Column. Or maybe Colbert's a fan of Gustavo's Grub Guide. If we were right the first time, and it is the truthiness of Arellano's Mexicaniness that Colbert is after, we've suggested elsewhere on this site that tonight's appearance would create the perfect opportunity for the host to replay one of his best “Formidable Opponent” segments, the one debating illegal immigration that included Colbert's show being undercut by the Spanish-language (and salsa dancing) El Colbert Report Gigante. But Weekly contributor Victor Infante believes that the segment that may need revisiting is “The Threat Down,” especially if Gustavo can convince Colbert that illegal aliens are greatest asset in the battle against the greatest threat to America: Bears.
OC Weekly Editor-in-Chief Matt Coker has been engaging, enraging and entertaining readers of newspapers, magazines and websites for decades. He spent the first 13 years of his career in journalism at daily newspapers before “graduating” to OC Weekly in 1995 as the alternative newsweekly’s first calendar editor.
